"I wanted the final week of my trip to be a surprise and outside of what I planned, with a focus on a deeply cultural experience." That was the simple request that brought Marteena, a solo traveller from Canada, to Japan Ikigai Trip. She had already planned the first three weeks of her Japan journey on her own with a friend. But for the final seven days, she wanted something different — something she couldn't find in a guidebook.
She found us on social media and filled out our Mystery Trip Questionnaire. From her answers, we learned everything we needed to craft her perfect week.

Meet Marteena
She planned the first part of her trip on her own with her friend, then decided to take a mystery trip with Japan Ikigai Trip after finding us on social media.
How We Designed Her Mystery Week
She visited our website and filled out our Mystery Trip Questionnaire. From her answers, we learned:
She loved local food, quiet towns, and nature walks. She wanted her trip to focus on Japanese craftsmanship and workshops.
She preferred calm, non-touristy places over big city crowds. She's comfortable with trains and buses, but wanted clear, simple instructions.
She wanted this week to be full of experiences, but not rushed.
So we designed a 7-day route that gently moves through:
We booked the hotels, core experiences, long-distance transport, and created a detailed but easy-to-follow itinerary.

What Her Mystery Week Felt Like
Her mystery week began with a flight into Japan's west coast and an airport bus ride to a mid-sized historic city — Kanazawa. The air was cooler here, the pace slower. She checked into a central ryokan hotel with a shared bathroom, the kind of place where wooden hallways creak softly underfoot.
- Flight into the region, then an airport bus to a mid-sized historic city on Japan's west coast
- Check in at a central ryokan hotel with a shared bathroom for the first night
- Dinner at one of several pre-selected local restaurants (seafood, izakaya, or comfort food)
Kanazawa Area — Garden, Local Food & Old Streets
- Morning visit to a classic Japanese garden with ponds, bridges, and seasonal trees
- Lunch at a busy local food market where residents buy fresh fish and produce
- Stroll through a preserved old-town quarter with wooden teahouses and narrow lanes
- Gold-leaf craft experience: decorating a small item at a local studio
Tsubame-Sanjo (Niigata) — Countryside Craft Town
A long-distance bus carried her deep into the Niigata countryside, to a rural craft town renowned across Japan for its metalwork. A local guide met her at the station, and what unfolded was the kind of experience you carry with you long after the trip ends.
- Long-distance bus to a rural craft town, the most known for metalwork in Japan
- Meet a local guide at the station
- Half-day workshop in a traditional factory — heating and hammering metal to create a personal frying pan
- Dinner with her guide at a restaurant well known for fresh seafood and regional dishes, paired with locally brewed sake
"Out of all the experiences, this was my favourite. My guides and sensei were so kind, funny, and very helpful for understanding their family's history. I developed a deeper appreciation for the craftsmanship that originates from this area."
Scenic travel brought her to a mountain city centred around a historic temple. The landscape shifted from flat plains to layered peaks. She stayed in temple-style lodging, with lantern-lit streets just outside the door.
- Scenic travel to a mountain city centred around a historic temple
- Stay in temple-style lodging, with lantern-lit streets just outside
- Simple, monk-style dinner cooked by the temple priest for everyone staying
Zenko-ji & Bessho Onsen — Temple Morning & Hot Spring Village
- Joined an early temple ceremony with chanting in the main hall with a guide
- Temple-style vegetarian breakfast using seasonal vegetables, tofu, and local flavours
- Zazen meditation in the temple lodge and sutra writing
- Afternoon exploration around the temple area
- Train to Bessho Onsen, a small hot spring village in the hills
This was the day the trip slowed to its quietest rhythm. A slow morning: hot spring soak, short walks to nearby temples, footbaths, and nostalgic streets. There was nowhere to rush to, nothing to check off — just presence.
- Slow morning: hot spring soak, short walks to nearby temples, footbaths, and nostalgic streets
- Second evening back at the Ryokan with a room featuring a private onsen
"These last days in the countryside were exactly what I needed. I was able to relax in the onsen and feel rejuvenated to return home. The staff were amazing, and contributed to my relaxation by making everything simple, accommodating, and special as they surprised me with a beautiful dinner that acknowledged my MBA graduation."
Tokyo — Final Night in the City
The final day brought a gentle shift back toward the urban pulse of Tokyo. A train and Shinkansen carried her from the quiet hills back to the capital — a fitting bookend for a week that had moved at its own, slower pace.
- Train and Shinkansen back to Tokyo
- Check in to a hotel with easy access to the international airport
- Suggested exploration options and dinner spots near the hotel
- Relaxed last evening before heading to the airport the next day
How She Felt About the Mystery Trip
"Overall, I think your team did a fantastic job. Even though I spent 3 weeks already in Japan, the final week was memorable. You fit in so many meaningful experiences with the budget I gave you, and I felt it was planned with the utmost care. I will definitely let you plan another trip for me in Japan when I return."
The whole route felt carefully put together
The frying-pan workshop, temple stay, and Bessho Onsen ryokan were the highlights
She could feel that each accommodation had been carefully selected for its hospitality, not just location or price
Next time, she'd love a slightly longer and slower mystery trip, and she'd gladly invest more in upgraded stays

You enjoy not knowing every detail in advance, as long as the logistics, timings, and safety are quietly taken care of in the background.
Prefer fewer, deeper memories over a rushed checklist
You'd rather come home with a handful of strong, meaningful memories than feel like you tried to tick off every famous spot.
